League of Legends is a video game inspired by the internationally famous game known as Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.
League of Legends (LOL) was developed and published by Riot Games Company exclusively for Microsoft Windows. It was released in 2009 and has become wildly successful around the world. The development team included Steve “Guinsoo” Feak, the original creator of the Warcraft series, and Steve “Pendragon” Mescon who started DotA-Allstars.com, and has worked closely with the DotA community for the past five years.
In 2011, Tencent Inc., China's largest Internet value-added services company, best known for its QQ Instant Messaging, acquired the lion’s share of Riot Games for 400 million dollars. The purpose of the deal was to join partners with an American online game company and bring the service directly to China.
In the game, the players are divided into 2 teams with 3 or 5 champions on each team. There are two similar areas in the opposing sides of the map which are called "fountain". Players start in their fountain at level 1, and their missions are to group up and destroy the "Turrets" (towers) and "Nexus" (base) of the opposing side. Along the way, players gain levels and accumulate wealth by killing the opposing team's players and "Minions", and the neutral monsters in the jungles. Also players need to purchase "items" to improve their strength. Each player is gaining levels on four specific champion skills, and Level Eighteen is a period for increasing the skills.
Although there are many advantages to playing this fantastic game, a major part is developing team-work skills. A player can not win the game without teammates. It is not primarily a killing game, it involves much, much more. The main object of the game is knocking out the enemy's turrets and Nexus, and not simply wanton destruction. Teamwork, skill, and strategy counts the most.
